Who are we?

We’re BASICS Scotland, a charity dedicated to providing pre-hospital and emergency medicine training to health professionals in the remote and rural areas of Scotland. BASICS Scotland is a registered charity (SCO30189) and company limited by guarantee (SC226924). The registered address is BASICS Scotland, Sandpiper House, Aberuthven Enterprise Park, Main Road, Aberuthven, PH3 1EL. BASICS Scotland comprises of an office in Aberuthven with an admin staff of around 10 people as well as over 100 BASICS Scotland instructors around the country who help deliver our courses. We also have a network of BASICS Responders who work closely with BASICS Scotland, the Scottish Ambulance Service and the Sandpiper Trust to provide immediate medical care.

We obtain information about you when you use our website, for example, when you contact us about upcoming courses, complete an application form or sign up to our mailing list.

What type of information is collected from you?

This depends on the type of involvement you have with BASICS Scotland. Below is a breakdown of the different types of services we provide, what information is collected and what we do with this information. We collect and retain the minimum amount of information to perform a specific task.


Courses provided by BASICS Scotland include Face-to-Face, Tele-education, Portfolio Project and online E-Learning. Some of the courses you may attend will require us to share this information with either the Edinburgh Royal College of Surgeons, ALSG or your employer. This is solely to ensure you are credited and certificated on the courses that are licensed and governed by these organisations or to assist with processing of payment for course places funded by your employer.

The personal information we collect will include your name, address, email address, contact telephone number and any relevant governing body registration numbers. This information will be retained on our systems for future reference, confirmation of attendance/certification, to allow us to contact you in future about any courses that we think may be of interest to you or if you are due to be re-certified for a particular course. This information will also allow us to provide you with a record of any training you may have carried out with BASICS Scotland.


Membership information is not shared with any other organisations and is retained for the use of BASICS Scotland only.

The personal information we collect will include your name, address, email address, contact telephone number and any relevant governing body registration numbers.

BASICS Scotland Responders

To effectively support and maintain our responder network we need to hold more detailed personal information. As we work closely with the Sandpiper Trust who supply the equipment to our responders we do share this information with them. We also share this information with the Scottish Ambulance Service who are responsible for the tasking of our responders. This information is required to be held for all active responders.

BASICS Scotland Instructors

We hold personal contact information on all past and present BASICS Scotland instructors. This allows us to effectively identify and contact suitable instructors for any courses that we may be running. Along with personal information, we also retain a record of all courses that instructors have attended and their current status of qualifications.

Volunteer Casualties

If you have registered with us to be a volunteer casualty on our courses, we retain your personal contact information so that we can contact you regarding any future courses that you may be interested in attending as a casualty. Online Payments

When placing an order / booking through the BASICS Scotland website we retain only the personal information required to process the order / booking. If you make a payment through our online shop your card information is not processed or held by us, it is collected by our third party payment processors, who specialise in the secure online capture and processing of credit/debit card transactions. We use Sagepay for online transactions and ensure we meet all their requirements for compliance and security.

How is your information used?

We may use your information to:

  • contact you regarding upcoming courses you may be interested in;
  • coordinate and deliver training opportunities suited to your area;
  • process orders that you have submitted through our online shop;
  • seek your views or comments on the services we provide;
  • notify you of changes to our services;

We review our retention periods for personal information on a regular basis. We will hold your personal information on our systems for as long as is necessary for the relevant activity.
